March Updates

March Seasonal Tasks for the Forestry Team

It has been a very busy and wet few months for the Forestry department, with various planting projects across the Estate. A new Lime and Sycamore avenue has been created locally and a variety of Willow and Poplar trees added on the Marsh. This will create an evolving landscape over the years to come.

The Estate has also welcomed three new woodland plantations with a further two new woodland areas planned by the end of 2024. These new plantations will assist with increased biodiversity and contribute towards carbon sequestration.

Other projects the team have been involved in is replenishing the agro forestry site at Appleton with new Quince chokeberry and Cherry trees and overseeing four areas of hedge laying to maintain and reinvigorate growth to promote healthy hedges for the future. The Forestry and Wardens team have also planted new hedgerows across the Estate which will act as invaluable wildlife corridors.

In amongst the above, new ways to utilise oversized timber have been instigated. A few years ago, one of the giant redwood trees shed a large stem during strong winds. This timber was kept and one part of it has now been cut into 3” slabs. This brings a whole new life to the timber and opportunities to make high quality furniture / ornamental features.
