FAQ’s

Below are answers to the most common questions asked by visitors planning a trip to Sandringham.

When is Sandringham open and how do I get there?

The House, Gardens and St Mary Magdalene Church are open from March until October each year. The Royal Parkland, including Children’s Play Area plus the shopping and catering facilities in the Courtyard, are open all year round. View our full opening times here.

Find directions to Sandringham here.

Access to the House is by time slots, so we strongly recommend booking a ticket in advance to guarantee entry (including for Sandringham members). Advance booking is not required to visit the Gardens, Royal Parkland and Courtyard facilities, but discounts apply to the House, Gardens and car parks when booked online before your visit.

If you wish to bring a larger group of 20-plus guests, please see our group page here.

Gift vouchers can be redeemed on the website, please enter your voucher’s code when purchasing. If tickets have been purchased for you as a gift, please present your e-tickets/tickets upon arrival and give both your name and the purchaser’s name.

We now issue e-tickets. These can be printed at home or shown on a mobile device when you arrive at Sandringham. Please check your email inbox and junk/spam folder before querying missing e-tickets/tickets.

If you created an online account, it is possible to change the date of your booking yourself up to 24 hours ahead of your visit.

Accompanying carers receive free admission, but must still book a carer ticket. Please note that you will need to show an in-date carer ID or proof of carer evidence when you arrive.

If you may need any access assistance, please email our Ticket Office ahead of your visit. See the contact details here.

Sandringham is part of the RHS Partner Gardens scheme, the Historic Houses Association and also accepts Blue Light Membership. Please choose the relevant scheme on the ticketing pages when purchasing. You must present an in-date relevant pass upon entry to Sandringham House/Garden to validate any discounts.

There are a number of catering facilities to choose from on the Estate. Depending on the amount of time you have during your visit, options range from a quick takeaway to longer lunches and Afternoon Teas.

For breakfast, brunch, lunch, drinks and cakes, you do not need to prebook a table. Afternoon Tea must be pre-booked online at least 48 hours in advance of your visit.

Yes, there are plenty of areas and space to picnic in the Royal Parkland. BBQs are not permitted anywhere on the Estate.

Toilet facilities, including baby-change facilities and a Changing Places accessible toilet with hoist, curtain, adult changing tables and increased space can be found in the Courtyard. Additional toilets can also be found inside the Sandringham Restaurant and at the Stables within the Gardens (when open), but there are no toilet facilities inside Sandringham House.

The nearest railway station is King’s Lynn, and the number 35 bus service – which runs between King’s Lynn bus station and Hunstanton – stops in the Royal Park.

Sandringham is close to National Route 1 of the National Cycle Network (see here) and bike racks can be found in the Courtyard near the Ticket Office. However, we do not have left-luggage facilities.

Further information about train and bus services can be found on the Directions page.

Yes, we have two electric-car charging points in the North car park, which work on a first-come, first-served basis.

Our car parks work on an ANPR system. If you prebook tickets you can enter your registration details ahead of your visit in your online ticketing account or you can give the information to the Ticket Office on arrival. If you are visiting the Royal Parkland and choose to pay-as-you-go, you need to enter your vehicle registration details into the car park pay kiosks before departure to work out the fee due.

Dogs are welcome in the Royal Parkland, Courtyard area, shop and in designated areas of the Sandringham Restaurant. However, only assistance dogs are allowed in Sandringham House and Gardens. See here for more information about bringing your dog to Sandringham.

Motorhomes and campervans under six metres in length can be accommodated in our car parks during the day. If your motorhome or campervan is longer than this, please discuss with the Ticket Office before your visit. Unfortunately, cars towing caravans are not permitted on the Estate.

We will do our best to accommodate you for House and Gardens visits at the next available opportunity if we have space, but this may not be possible, particularly at peak times. Please don’t contact us via phone unless you are a group of 10 or more.

For larger groups and all other bookings please call the Ticket Office as soon as it is safe to do so. Specific tours and events run to a strict timetable.

Unfortunately, space constraints and security considerations mean it is not possible to leave any luggage with us during your visit. Large bags, rucksack-style baby carriers or suitcases are not permitted inside Sandringham House or Gardens.

We suggest you allow at least 3.5 hours to view the House and Gardens. If you wish to enjoy the Royal Parkland or our catering facilities, please allow longer.

A multimedia handset can be hired in advance or on the day (subject to availability) when booking a ticket. There will also be knowledgeable guides who can answer questions in rooms of the House.

Sandringham House, Shop, Terrace Café and Restaurant are all fully accessible. Adapted toilets and baby-changing facilities can be found at the Courtyard.

Smaller mobility scooters, prams, pushchairs and front baby carriers are welcome inside the House, but rucksack-style baby carriers are not permitted.

Due to the landscape and nature of the Gardens, wheelchairs and mobility scooters should be suitable for rough and uneven ground as well as for gravel and rugged pathways. Some surfaces may also be slippery when wet. We suggest wearing sturdy shoes or wellington boots, especially in wet weather, and suitable outdoor clothing.

Manual wheelchairs are available from the Courtyard Ticket Office for visitors on a first-come, first-served basis subject to a £20 refundable deposit. Regrettably, no mobility scooters are available.

The Gardens entrance is approximately 200 metres from the car park and from there it is approximately 450 metres to Sandringham House.

A free shuttle buggy runs to and from the House from inside the Gardens entrance. For further information on this and on distances between various points, please see our Accessibility Guide here.

Photography and videography for non-commercial purposes are encouraged in the Gardens and Royal Parkland areas. We love to see our Facebook, Instagram and X pages tagged in your images.

However, no photography or videography (including on mobile phones) is permitted inside Sandringham House. For commercial photography or media requests, please contact [email protected].

In the interests of visitor safety, we do not permit the launching or landing of drones anywhere on the Estate without prior consent and approval of insurance and licence documentation.
