About Sandringham
Sandringham Estate is most famous as the private country retreat of Their Majesties The King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Beyond its magnificent House and Gardens it is a working Estate where conservation and stewardship lie at the heart of an all-encompassing vision to maintain and protect the land and buildings for future generations.
The Estate has evolved significantly over five generations of British Monarchs, with the House and Gardens forming the core of visitor enjoyment today.
‘Dear old Sandringham’
Sandringham is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Sant Dersingham”, the sandy part of Dersingham, subsequently shortened to Sandringham. There is evidence of a residence on the present site of the House as early as 1296, prehistoric flint tools have also been found in the area and there are remains of a Roman villa quite close to nearby Appleton Farm.
It is evident from the amount of time Members of the Royal Family spend here that there is a strong affection with the Estate.
King George V, wrote, “Dear old Sandringham, the place I love better than anywhere else in the world,” and his grandson, King George VI, wrote “I have always been happy here and I love the place.”
The Gardens at Sandringham were first opened to the public by King Edward VII in 1908, and Queen Elizabeth II opened the House itself to the public in her Silver Jubilee year in 1977.
